Bradley Wood

Works / Exhibitions / CV / News

Suggestive of modernists like Matisse and Chaim Soutine, as well as 20th Century German Expressionist painters, such as Ludwig Kirchner, Bradley Wood’s paintings express ambivalence about the current human condition. While the settings in which Wood situates his languid, idiosyncratic figures suggest comfort and privilege, the skewed perspectives from which we view them imply that everything may not be as it appears on his lushly painted surfaces. Figures and interiors seem ready to slip off the canvas. There is a subtle social critique in Wood’s combination of subject matter and style. Wood’s work has been exhibited in venues in New York and Toronto, and was featured in the acclaimed “Human Condition” exhibition that took place in an abandoned Los Angeles hospital in 2016. In 2017, he was the recipient of the prestigious Moth Art Prize and Residency in Ireland.
